McCauley named Fairborn YMCA volunteer of the year
The YMCA of Greater Dayton has recognized Councilwoman Marilyn McCauley as the Fairborn YMCA volunteer of the year.
As an owner of McManagement Group and a Fairborn City Council, McCauley became a part of the Fairborn YMCA Advisory Board in 2011. She completed her term as Board Chair this last September, but remains active on the board.
McCauley, who said she was surprised to be chosen, was recognized for her advocacy of the YMCA and its mission.
“It’s usually a coach or someone in the youth sports programs, but I am honored,” she said.
“Marilyn brought fresh ideas and accountability to our volunteers, helped us achieve our branch goals and the goals of our board to become and remain engaged in the prosperity of the YMCA,” said Jackie Brockman, Branch Executive at the Fairborn YMCA. “She is a great collaborator and a champion for the Fairborn Y.”
As a board member, McCauley has advised staff on ways to build and spread the word about Fairborn Y programs. She also helped streamline the board operations process to make it more efficient.
“We figured out ways to use our time more wisely and we formed committees that hadn’t been in place for a long time,” said the councilwoman. “We wanted to bring on other community members and regular Y members to let them become more involved in decision-making process.”
A major focus of the YMCA is the annual Strong Kids Campaign fundraiser. The Fairborn Y alone gives an average of $200,000 in scholarships annually.
“This allows kids and families be part of the Y who wouldn’t otherwise be able to do so,” McCauley said. “That is what really enticed me to get involved with the Y.”
The Fairborn YMCA Advisory Board continues to work on building collaborative relationships with groups such as the City of Fairborn, Wright State University and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
“This is so important and we’re seeing it happen more and more. It’s critical for future efforts,” McCauley said.
The Volunteer of the Year awards were presented during the YMCA’s 143rd Annual Meeting at the David H. Ponitz Center at Sinclair in Dayton on March 13. The event raised more than $22,000 for the YMCA’s annual campaign and consisted of a silent auction, dinner and a program where volunteers and staff were recognized for their contributions to the success of the YMCA of Greater Dayton.
