Today's seniors are more health conscious than ever before.
At the YMCA we've made the health and fitness of our seniors a top priority by providing programs for the spirit, mind and body. Through group exercise classes and aquatic programs that concentrate on mobility and flexibility, dance classes, social events, and volunteer activities, the YMCA is bringing Seniors / Active Older Adults (AOA) together for camaraderie, fellowship and fun!
Seniors/AOA programs are FREE for Y members!
Senior Fitness classes include:
Have fun & move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, & activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, & a ball are offered for resistance, & a chair is used for seated &/or standing support.
SilverSneakers® – Cardio Fit
Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular & muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles & a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, stretching & relaxation exercises.
This class will move your whole body through a complete series of seated & standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance & range of movement.
This class combines aerobic and anaerobic segments designed to boost your metabolism and increase your cardiovascular endurance. Floor work is included in this class.
SilverSneakers®BOOM MOVE IT
This new SilverSneakers class will take you to the next level in your exercise routines. This 45 minutes higher intensity dance/workout class improves cardio endurance and burns calories. MOVE IT is all about breaking a sweat and having fun.
This class will take you to the next level in your exercise routines. This 45-minute class will move you through sets of exercises that focus on different muscle groups. The focus of this class is on toning muscles and building strength.
SilverSneakers® BOOM MIND
Strength. Confidence. Flexibility. The mind takes the best from yoga and Pilates and combines them into one fusion class. Designed to relax the body and mind with peaceful music and invigorating movements. The focus of this class is on core muscles, lower body strength and balance.
This class takes the original concept of Zumba and makes it accessible for seniors and beginners. This class improves balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular strength. Participants will learn the basic dance steps of the salsa, meringue,cha cha, mambo, cumbia, calypso and even a little rock and roll!
Active Older Adult (AOA)
Designed specifically for the Active Older Adult population. Movement set to music with the goal of improving the cardiovascular system and increasing energy levels.
AOA Water Exercise
A program designed especially for adults with any form of muscle, bone, or joint discomfort. An instructor will lead the class through gentle exercise, which increases flexibility & endurance. The exercises also improve circulation & strengthen the spirit, mind, & body.
AOA stands for Active Older Adult. This cycling class is designed for members ages 50&Up. This workout is performed on stationary bicycles. Class size is limited and on a first-come-first-served basis. Cycle passes are issued at the front desk
AOA Corn Toss
Corn Toss is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing bags of corn at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. A bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the platform scores 1 point. Play continues until a team or player reaches (or exceeds) the score of 21.
YMCA AOA Volleyball a great way to stay active, have fun, and meet new people.
Arthritis Foundation Class (AFAP)
The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program is designed especially for adults with arthritis. An instructor will lead the class through gentle exercise, which increases flexibility and endurance. Classes instructed in a heated pool and provide a fun, friendly atmosphere in which participants can make new friends and try new activities.
If you are looking for a way to reduce stress, consider Tai chi. (TIE-chee). Tai Chi uses gentle flowing movements to reduce stress and improve health. Tai Chi is sometimes described as “medication in motion” because it promotes serenity through gentle movements, connecting the mind and body.
Active Older Adult Line Dancing
This class is designed to be a low-impact dance class just for seniors! Our instructor will teach you the latest and greatest “old school” line dances.
Ultra Beginner Line Dance
This class is for people who have never line danced or have little experience. Students will learn basic steps and names of steps. These steps will be included in basic dances.
Advanced Beginner Line Dance
This class is for people who have line dance experience. Steps will be more advanced and included in dances.
Healthways and the YMCA of Greater Dayton is proud to host our annual Senior Showcase. This six day event will be provided for YMCA of Greater Dayton members age 55 and over to compete in a variety of events as they represent their home YMCA. Prizes will be awarded for each event as well as the top three YMCA’s in the association. The Senior Showcase takes place every year in the Fall.
