Labor Day Family

Labor Day: the unofficial end to summer.

Fall doesn’t officially begin until September 22. But Labor Day means that the pools are closing and school is underway. Fall sports are in full swing.

While summer is a lot of fun, my family always looks forward to fall each year. My husband and I often talk about how grateful we are to live in a place where we get to experience all four seasons.

There’s so much to do in the fall. The weather is typically a little cooler but you can still enjoy the warmth of the sun. And who doesn’t love watching the leaves change colors?

Here are some great activities you can do in the fall, whether by yourself, with your family or friends.

Go to a high school football game. There’s just something fun about cheering on your local team and listening to the marching band. It’s exciting to watch the game with your community.

Go on a hike. There are so many great trails around the greater Dayton area. John Bryan State Park, Clifton Gorge, Caesar Creek, Sugarcreek MetroPark, Germantown MetroPark and Bill Yeck Park are just some of the many places you can get out and experience nature. There’s trails for all levels of hikers, and it’s great exercise.

Check out your local farmer’s market. You should have a little time left before the markets close down for the season. Grab some fresh produce or fall-themed items and support your neighbors at the same time!

Get lost in a corn maze. There are many options to choose from in the area. Some are more challenging, others are more family friends. But it’s always a lot of fun!    Take a family walk one evening. After dinner one night, simply walk around your neighborhood. Take turns pointing out signs of fall that you see. Hint: you’ll see more than just the changing leaves!

Have a campfire. It’s so much fun sitting around a fire with family or friends, enjoying some cider or hot chocolate and maybe some s’mores. Fall is the perfect time because the weather is so pleasant.

Go camping. If you’re really feeling brave, pack up the tent and the sleeping bags and hit the road. You’ll likely be able to wear just jeans and sweatshirts and won’t get too cold at night. Plus the views will be gorgeous with the changing leaves.

There’s something for everyone to do in the fall. Just be sure to get out and enjoy the season before the leaves are gone and the temperature turns cold!
