Easter egg hunt to take place next weekend

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn Chamber of Commerce, Foy’s Stores and support groups from Wright Patterson Air Force Base have teamed up for the 44th year to sponsor the Annual Community Egg Hunt that will take place at 2 p.m. Easter Sunday at Central Park next to the YMCA.
Donations from Chamber members helped defray the cost of bikes, candy and a guaranteed prize for each child who joins in the hunt. The event is free with children divided into age groups of 1-3, 4-6 and 7-10 who will scramble after 10,000 eggs placed throughout the park.
WPAFB’s Company Grade Officer’s Council and Force Support Squadron members along with Chamber Ambassadors spent time at the WPAFB Youth Center stuffing the eggs and will be on site Sunday to hide eggs and set out prizes that will be collected in the Fairborn YMCA gymnasium when the hunt is over. One lucky egg in each age group holds a ticket for a bicycle.
“This is one of the wildest scenes you’ll ever see,” said Chamber Executive Director Paul Newman. “Two years ago it took only a minute and 45 seconds for all 10,000 eggs to be picked up. We asked the city not to cut the grass in the park last year to hide the eggs a little better and it stretched it out about a minute longer.”
The event was conceived 44 years ago by former Chamber Director John Dalton and Norman Foy. It originally was held on the base but had to be moved outside the fence after the events of 9/11.
“I really have to tip my hat to the Chamber businesses and organizations who gave so generously this year to cover the candy cost and more than 2,000 prizes,” said Newman. “They certainly helped to make this an outstanding afternoon for the children with the reward being a big smile on these youngsters faces.
Also on hand will be a pair of Easter bunnies who will freely pose for pictures with the children.
