Scott McGohan and Lynn Vu received award of appreciation from YMCA of Greater Dayton

aso_-_teen_awards.jpg[Dayton, OH 3/19/12] – The YMCA of Greater Dayton is pleased to recognize Scott McGohan and Lynn Vu as the YMCA Teen Services volunteers of the year.

Scott’s Story

In the summer of 2006, we ran our first ‘Teens in Action’ Mentors Matter program thanks to Scott McGohan’s innovation and passion to serve a greater community.  Through this program, our teens are given the opportunity to learn the sport of golf and spend time with adult role models (mentors). Community leaders throughout Dayton volunteer their time to the program and the teens and mentors have the opportunity to learn from each other and spend time together all summer long.

They not only play golf, but participate in group teambuilding and character building activities and share personal stories and lessons from their lives.

Scott not only created the mentoring piece of this summer program but also has participated as a mentor every year as well.  He comes out at least once a week each summer, usually more, and shares his time, heart and wisdom with our teens.  Scott is a constant encouragement for them to live a more positive life and make better choices.

Scott also spends time behind the scenes volunteering as the chair of our Teens in Action Advisory Committee and helping us raise funds for the Teen programs as well. No matter how busy his schedule, Scott makes the time to help us out! It is because of the commitment of people like him, that we are able to continue to grow in our work with area youth.

Lynn’s Story
Lynn is a 2004 graduate of the YMCA Junior Leadership Dayton program.  Since graduation from JLD, Lynn has been an active volunteer for the Y. She has served 410 hours in the YMCA’s JLD Alumni Resource program, assisting in program planning, mentoring and fundraising efforts for the past seven years.
She also has served as a volunteer and mentor for the Teens in Action summer program. Over the past 2 summers, she has served over 216 volunteer hours spending time with the teens doing community service and leadership activities.

Lynn’s work has and continues to make the Dayton community a better place. She is an important asset to our Y and a role model for her peers, colleagues and other volunteers. It is because of the commitment of people like her that we are able to continue to grow in our work with area teens.

The award was presented during the YMCA's 141st Annual Meeting at the David H. Ponitz Center at Sinclair in Dayton recently. The event raised over $22,000 for the YMCA's annual Strong Kids Campaign and consisted of a silent auction, dinner and a program where volunteers and staff were recognized for their contributions to the success of the YMCA of Greater Dayton.

Thank you again to Scott and Lynn. Their dedication to the Y makes our community a better place.
