SPRINGBORO -- The kids at a local YMCA summer camp are taking the heat in stride, with activities that keep them cool while still having fun outdoors.

"We keep them hydrated and keep them cool and comfortable in the shade," said Teresa Perry, Program director at the Coffman YMCA. "We play games in the shade and we also go to the creek that is here at Patricia Allyn Park."

Perry said they are fortunate to have two umbrella-shaped water misters at the park, and they bring barrels of water and ice for the kids.

She said they typically take water and sunscreen breaks on the hour, every hour, but they have increased those breaks to every half-hour since the temperature has his 90 degrees. The kids also get the opportunity to go swimming every day.

"The kids have been awesome this year. We've had really large numbers and we've had a great time," Perry said.

The YMCA is still taking signups for the camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Aug. 17. To signup call the Coffman YMCA in Springboro at 937-886-9622.
