YMCA Neighborhood Development Centers Announce 2005 Volunteer of the Year

March 21, 2005- The YMCA of Greater Dayton recently held its 134 th Annual Meeting at the Schuster Center in Dayton. The event raised close to $21,000 for the YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign. The event consisted of a silent auction, dinner and a program where volunteers and staff were both recognized for their contributions to the success of the YMCA of Greater Dayton.

During the program, the YMCA Neighborhood Development Centers recognized Jay Crosby as their 2005 Volunteer of the Year. As a youth, Jay learned to swim and play basketball at the YMCA. As an adult, he has volunteered at the YMCA for more than 50 years sharing his love for dance. Jay first began volunteering at the 5 th Street YMCA back in the 1950’s. After the West YMCA was built, Jay moved to that facility where he has remained. Even though the facility has changed names from the West YMCA to the YMCA Neighborhood Development Center at Dixon United Methodist Church, Jay has remained a steady constant for that community. Jay volunteers weekly to teach a class to YMCA members who are mostly widows and who come to enjoy his soulful line dancing. When asked why he has continued to volunteer all these years, he said that he has always enjoyed dancing and feels like he is contributing to the community by teaching something others can benefit from learning. Thank you Jay for 50 years of unforgettable service!
