The YMCA of Greater Dayton Honors Pauline Moore For 50 Years of Service

March 16, 2004 - The YMCA of Greater Dayton recently honored Pauline Moore for 50 years of service to the YMCA at their 133rd Annual Meeting at the Schuster Center. Affectionately known as Miss Polly, Moore was hired on April 21, 1954 as a Fountain Waitress at the Central YMCA branch, which is now known as the Downtown YMCA. This length of service is unprecedented for the YMCA of Greater Dayton.

Over the years, Moore has held a variety of positions at both the downtown Central Branch as well as the West YMCA. These positions include Cashier, Food Service Manager, Weight Room Attendant, Receptionist, and Front Desk Membership Representative.

Moore was one of the first African American employees to work at the Central branch in downtown Dayton and, as such, broke through racial barriers of that day.

Some comments from supervisors on her performance evaluations over the years:

“(Miss Polly) has a very good and energetic attitude about life and the YMCA. Everyone loves her.”--Robin Carter (2/14/00)

“Many extra hours every year are given to the YMCA through her 12 – 14 hours days.”--J. Davison (6/24/87)

Moore’s enthusiasm for the mission of the YMCA and her desire to serve those around her make her a truly unique and admirable individual. It only takes a minute with Miss Polly before you feel like you have found a true friend.
