"YOU"ga: Focusing on Your Mind and Body in a Group Yoga Session

Some of the many benefits to attending a Group Yoga session include a calm atmosphere, a group of like-minded individuals, and a workout that increases energy and improves focus. However, many who are just starting to explore Yoga may be apprehensive about trying new exercises in an unfamiliar group setting. Below are some useful tips to help ease such concerns.

Modifying a pose to suit your comfort level

One of the most important aspects of Yoga is to remember that your purpose is to focus on self-health. Yoga is designed to be a stress-reducing workout with no pressure to keep up with anyone but yourself. Therefore, when attending a group Yoga session, appreciate the presence of your group and your instructor, but listen to your body as you attempt the various Yoga poses. If a slightly modified pose makes your body happy, you will still gain all the same benefits both mentally and physically.

Staying with the breath

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we focus on so many things. We are accomplishing tasks, caring for others, or driving to and from our various destinations. When we arrive to the Group Yoga session, we may enter the room and still be in “go” mode from our busy day. In our Yoga space, it is our time to transition into “let it go” mode. In these moments, focus simply on these two things: yoga poses and breathing patterns. Taking that time to “stay with the breath” by practicing deep breathing during our poses helps the body feel centered and the mind to become clear.

Attempting a new pose

During a Yoga session, the instructor may introduce a pose that is new to you. It could be one that focuses on extended stretching of the lower body, or maybe it’s a pose that emphasizes balance work. In these moments, while it may be a bit intimidating, have faith in your ability to maneuver your body with a clear and focused mind. Your first attempt at a new pose does not need to be perfect, but it is always the most important step to improvement. You just might surprise yourself, and continued practice can take you to the next level.
