Choosing a Healthy New Year’s Resolution, and Sticking to It!

8 January 2018

So, it’s that time of year again!  What’s going to be your New Year’s Resolution?  What about taking better care of yourself?  A lot of people want to lose weight, but being “healthy” can mean different things.  Consider:

  • Resolve to schedule a monthly massage.  They do wonders for your physical and mental well-being.   You can find great deals on Groupon, or places like Massage Envy offer monthly subscriptions.
  • Plan a monthly date night.  It’s hard for young parents to take time for their relationships, but it’s important.  The YMCA offers monthly Parents’ Night Out events for a small fee that ensure your kids will be cared for and kept busy while you enjoy a quiet dinner or a movie.
  • Research natural cleaners, and decide to try a new one every month.  Help our planet and your family at the same time.   Pinterest has some great suggestions.
  • Decide to try a new vegetable every month.  Maybe you will find one you really enjoy.  While you’re trying new foods, resolve to track your “5-A-Day” fruits andNew Year’s Resolution veggies recommended by the US Department of Health.
  • Invest in a new water bottle that will help you monitor how much water you drink.  There are even apps to help you track and stay hydrated.

More importantly, how are you going to make sure you stick to your goal?  Here are some ideas that might get 2018 off to a good start.

  • Don’t set too many goals.  People who set too many goals can be easily overwhelmed and might lose sight of all of them.
  • Keep your goal realistic.  For example, a sedentary individual who wants to lose weight would be better served with a goal of getting to the gym on a consistent basis once a week to start.  Once that is a habit, consider increasing your workout times.
  • Get a support buddy.  It’s always easier when someone else is holding you accountable.
  • Have a goal.  If you want to get more active, then maybe target a 5K in the future.  Sign up for it now, so you are financially invested.
  • Have a reward in mind.  Make a visual and display it prominently in your home, office, car, or wherever will help remind you.

New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be complicated or unrealistic.  Simple goals can help 2018 be your healthiest year yet.
