Weather permitting today, Englewood and Huber Heights will hold groundbreaking ceremonies for Sinclair Community College Fast Track Learning Centers.
The centers will be attached to the YMCAs in each city and are intended to provide residents with an opportunity to take classes without traveling to Sinclair's downtown campus. Sinclair estimates it will save 30-40 percent in construction costs by attaching the centers to the YMCA, and that students will be able to take advantage of facilities at the YMCA such as child-care and gyms.
Huber Heights Mayor Jack Hensley welcomed the addition.
"To have a Sinclair satellite campus in Huber Heights is a dream come true," he said, "(We) are very excited about this partnership."
Englewood city officials agreed.
"We welcome the expansion with open arms," said Englewood Mayor Michael Bowers. "I'm sure the community will embrace Sinclair as much as they have Kleptz (branch of YMCA)."
Northmont school Superintendent Gale Mabry echoed Bowers' sentiments calling the partnership a "mutually beneficial" deal giving residents another neighborhood asset.
"It will be a nice educational addition and option for the community and the greater northern area," Mabry said.
Both Bowers and Englewood City Manager Eric Smith, along with Greater Dayton YMCA and Sinclair officials, will be at the 9 a.m. ground breaking ceremony at the center at Hoke and West National roads.
YMCA and Sinclair representatives will then join Hensley and city manager Jim Pierce for the Huber Heights ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at the Y on Brandt Pike and Shull Road.
The Fast Track Learning Centers will each be about 15,300 square feet, and have eight classrooms (24 students) and one larger classroom for 32 students. A small library, bookstore and lounge will also be constructed.
