Local Gymnasts Vault Over the Competition!
Kettering, OH - 08/24/12 - The South YMCA gymnastics team recently travelled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to compete in the 2012 YMCA National Gymnastics Championships. With 1,700 athletes competing from all across the country, the competition was intense. Our local athletes had to perform at their very best and they exceeded all expectations!
Eighteen gymnasts medaled in one or more events at Nationals. The talented group of South Y gymnasts range in age from 8 years old to 2012 high school graduates and competed in Level 4, 5, 6, 7 or Excel Divisions.
Routines were performed on the Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise and top athletes earned a place in the All Around Competition.
Spectacular finishes from individual South Y gymnasts include the following:
Excel Elaine Lewis – 3rd on Vault, 1st on Bars, 6th on Beam and 3rd All Around
Excel Stacyie Phelps – 14th on Bars
Level 7 Aubrey Higgins – 3rd on Vault, 8th on Bars, 9th on Beam
Level 7 Abby Nichols – 7th on Vault, 3rd on Beam, 6th on Floor, 8th All Around
Level 6 Julianne Enwright – 7th on Bars, 2nd on Beam, 7th All Around
Level 6 Taylor Hill – 12th on Bars
Level 6 Gwen McCray – 18th on Vault
Level 5 Dana Sheldon – 3rd on Vault, 6th on Bars, 9th on Beam, 2nd on Floor, 3rd All Around

The South Y gymnastics team practices year round and consists of Competitive Levels 4-9. The team is coached by longtime YMCA gymnastics director, Karen Sheldon.
The South YMCA, also offers Gymnastics and Tumbling Classes throughout the year for girls and boys ages 3 & older. A variety of classes ranging from preschool to school-age are available for first time beginners up to advanced gymnastics. Registration for Fall Classes has begun.
