dbj 2012 eventAbout 150 of Dayton’s most fit gathered Wednesday morning at the Dayton Business Journal’s second annual Healthiest Employers event.

Hosted at the Crowne Plaza, the event recognized the top 13 employers in the region for their innovative and successful employee health programs.

Dan Parker spoke on behalf of his company, Delta Dental, the title sponsor for the event.

“The mouth is a leading indicator of your overall health, so we think it makes sense to insure the mouth,” he said.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield was the presenting sponsor. Tim Schmalz spoke for the company and emphasized the impact of corporate wellness programs.

“We at Anthem think this is hugely important because it allows us to recognize companies that are aggressively promoting a culture of health,” Schmalz said. “These companies are bucking the status quo.”

The winning companies were rated by Healthiest Employers, the contributing sponsor for the event, through a 75-question assessment. Healthiest Employers’ Rod Reason presented some of the company’s findings after evaluating the scores. In Dayton, 70 percent of company wellness programs only started in the last four years, he said. The trend is reaching small companies with 10 to 15 employees as well. Dayton averaged a score of 50.23, compared to the national average of 54.23.

“It’s a win-win situation, that’s the good thing about corporate wellness,” Reason said.

Keynote speaker Scott McGohan, CEO of McGohan Brabender, finished the morning with a challenge to the attendees.

“What if we as a community said, ‘We’re going to be the healthiest city in America,’” McGohan asked.

As recognized at the event, Dayton’s healthiest employees are:

Chapel Electric, Compunet Clinical Laboratories, The Dupps Co., LJB Inc., Midmark Corp., Mini University, NewPage, One Call Now, City of Piqua, Shook Construction, Shumsky, Wright-Patt Credit Union and YMCA.
