HUBER HEIGHTS — Formerly known as the Big Loser Challenge, the Huber Heights YMCA’S new and improved 12-week program called Move 2 Lose will help local residents achieve their weight loss goals.

The program, which starts in early February, will allow participants to work out two times a week for 12 weeks, in a small group, with a certified personal trainer.

The Move 2 Lose program has been running annually for the past three years and is in its fourth season. The program is open for members and nonmembers. It kicks off on Feb. 5 and runs until April 30. It’s also running at the other YMCAs in the Dayton region.

Jim Sawin, the health and wellness director of the Huber Heights branch, said 40 members have registered so far and will have a few teams of three based on the number of members registered.

“It’s a great way to get people involved in small groups and help them make the right choices,” Sawin said. “One of the biggest problems today is obesity. We try to benefit our members health-wise.”

In past seasons of the Move 2 Lose program, more than 350 participants have lost more than 3,600 pounds. Last season, there were a total of 67 participants registered.

William Kirby, the superintendent of the Huber Heights City School District, was one of the participants and said if it were not for the Move 2 Lose program he’d still be saying that he needed to exercise rather than actually doing it.

“The Move to Lose is an excellent program for motivating individuals to work out and burn calories. The workouts help to relieve the stress of my job as well.” Kirby said. “Now I am challenged to keep the commitment that I had made to myself to keep the weight off and increase my muscle tone.”

Another participant was Karri Lovell of Springfield, who’s also a student at Wright State University. Lovell has participated in the program for the past four sessions and said she lost weight every time. She lost a total of 30 pounds and won second place in the first session.

“The trainers are willing to help no matter what level you are on. It is great for all ages, and weights,” Lovell said. “I will continue to participate as long as they offer this wonderful program.”

At the end of the season, there will be a celebration for all of the participants in the association.
