VANDALIA, Ohio (WDTN) - Sometimes the simplest of tasks are difficult for Carol Ayala of Vandalia. Carol is waiting for a kidney transplant. She's been on dialysis for three years but through it all, by her side has been her daughter, seventh grader Shakiyla.

Shakiyla is her mother's eyes. She helps her read labels at the store and cook at home. At times it appears the two of switched roles but Shakiyla doesn't complain. In fact, she sees this time as an opportunity because she'd like to become a registered nurse.

Shakiyla said, "By me helping my mom it's basically helping me by what I want to be doing in life by helping people when they are actually sick."

And we, in turn, wanted to help her and her mother. So members of the community partnered with us from WDTN-TV and Dayton's CW to makes their wishes come true.

Chris Cota from Fricker's got the ball rolling by treating them to dinner for two once a week for an entire year.

Rave Movie Theaters gave them tickets and Huntington Bank provided passes to Kings Island for Shakiyla and three of her friends because Carol had expressed concerns that her daughter doesn't get to have as much fun as other teens because she's always taking care of her.

Bev Via of Goodwill/Easter Seals announced she'll be doing an assessment of Carol for low vision to make sure she's set up properly at home.
Then a little pick me up came from the YMCA and Hausfeld's salon.

Jeff Jaehnen gave Shakiyla a year's membership and told her she can bring her mother along. He said a personal trainer would be available to help. Bobbie Hausfeld outlined a wonderful day for a mother and daughter to share.

Hausfeld said, "We would like to have a special mother-daughter journey day and spoil you rotten. We're going to have a limo pick you up at your home, bring you to the spa and have a mother-daughter day at the spa. And to top it off... new outfits, dinner and a limo ride home.

Systemax granted the last wish supplying a computer and monitor for the family to take home.

And all that was needed from that point on were some napkins to dry the tears.

"Oh my gosh, it's amazing. I'm really surprised. I wasn't expecting anything. I'm just proud to receive everything I have today and showing the community really does care about me and my daughter. This is truly a blessing," said Carol.

Shakiyla added, "I believe in wishes right now, I'm just so I love my life, it's so amazing and I'm crying tears of joy. I appreciate it.
