Preble County Y Announces Volunteer of the Year
Jim Simon received award of appreciationjim_simon.jpg

[Dayton, OH 4/01/11] – Jim Simon was recognized for his outstanding work on behalf of the Preble County YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign.  As the board chairman of the Preble County Y, Jim made a commitment early last spring to do a fundraiser on his own. He announced at a board meeting that he would be doing a personal weight loss challenge to lose 50 lbs for Strong Kids by his birthday on June 19th.  His goal was to get $100 dollars for every pound he could lose.

Jim started watching his diet and lap swimming at the Y around April 1st, and started soliciting pledges of support at the same time.  The 41st person to pledge their support got Jim to $100 dollars per pound, which gave him added motivation to reach his weight loss goal. On June 19th, Jim weighed in to find out his actual weight loss was just over 51 pounds.

The award was presented during the YMCA's 140th Annual Meeting at the David H. Ponitz Center at Sinclair in Dayton recently. The event raised over $19,000 for the YMCA's annual Strong Kids Campaign.

The event consisted of a silent auction, dinner and a program where volunteers and staff were recognized for their contributions to the success of the YMCA of Greater Dayton.

Jim’s commitment to combine a healthy challenge for himself and a reward for Strong Kids ended up raising more than $5,000 dollars, enabling numerous financially disadvantaged kids and families to enjoy the Preble County Y.  For his extraordinary accomplishment and dedication, Jim Simon is being recognized and honored as the Preble County YMCA’s Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations and thank you to Jim Simon for your incredible work. You are a hero to the Y!
