MINDFUL VERSUS MINDLESS EATING
Minority Health Month Event

[Dayton, OH – 03.23.11] Minority Health Month Event: “Mindful versus Mindless Eating” Children and families served by the Y as well as the outside public are invited to attend a FREE Minority Health Event being offered by the YMCA of Greater Dayton through a grant from the Commission on Minority Health. 

Two Event Dates and Locations: 
Tuesday, April 12th, 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Grace United Methodist Church, 1001 Harvard Blvd., Dayton
Thursday, April 14th, 5:00 – 8:00 pm at St. Anthony Parish, 830 Bowen Street, Dayton

The purpose of these events is to increase awareness of disease risk factors and promote healthy nutrition through disease prevention strategies. 

A 30 minute Zumba class will be followed with a presentation by Alberta Scruggs, RD, LD on "Mindful Eating versus Mindless Eating" emphasizing the purpose of food in the body for optimal health. Alberta will engage participants in a meal planning session and food demonstration incorporating the recommended 6 food groups of the MyPyramid Food System into one meal by creating a grilled chicken salad and fruit smoothie combo.  There will be fun, nutrition-related games and activities for children and adults. 

Take home incentives will be a grocery gift card and free cookbook approved by the Commission on Minority Health (1 per family).  Children will receive a fruits & vegetables book mark, growth chart and recipe card provided by Dayton Children's Medical Center and Kohl's.
