As we are all waiting for the weather to break and to get outside I think there is a local resource that could be a great help, but is often overlooked.  The South YMCA, located at 4545 Marshall Road, has a ton of opportunities to get out of the house, burn off the pent up energy and learn a thing or two.  There are youth sports, swimming for all ages an adult classes.  I am going to run down the basics of the classes at the South Y and I encourage you to contact them for additional information or for anything I might leave out.  All programs at the South Y run monthly (4 week session) ad registration is necessary each month to continue participation.  ALL programs are available to members and non-members.  This is the great part.  Even if you are not a member of the South Y your family is able to participate in any of the programs.  Prices are based on membership status; members receive 50% off non-member rates.  Registration is first-come, first-served basis.  Finally, Financial Assistance is available to those who qualify, the representatives tat the Member Service Desk can help you with more information on this

There are so many classes and programs that no one would read the entire article if I listed all of them.  Here is a quick summary.  The next full session for swim lessons, Tae Kwon Do, gymnastics and enrichment classes will begin on February 28th, and from the looks of things we will still be stuck inside then, and the session ends on March 26.  Registration for members begins February 16 and for non-members February 21.  A sampling of what is available is gymnastics/tumbling for little ones ages 3 and up.  Swim programs/lessons for those as young as 6 months with a caregiver all the up to adults.  There is a Lifeguard Certification course, American Heat Association Safety Training course, group exercise classes and even competitive gymnastics and swim teams.

The last thing I want to mention, and you can only find it locally at the YMCA, is Adventure Guides/Princess.  This is a wonderful father/child program for boys and girls through 8th grade.  The emphasis is on father and child spending quality time together, giving attention to each other, enjoying each other and learning to relate in a way that will leave memories of a lifetime.  Again, this program is available to member and non-member dads and kids.

So in these dreary days of late winter lets make sure to take full advantage of all of the resources that are available.  The South YMCA is a great resource to keep ourselves and our kids from going stir crazy.
