YMCA of Greater Dayton Announces Colonel Gregory Johnson to visit Beavercreek YMCA

August 8, 2008- Colonel Gregory H. Johnson, NASA space shuttle astronaut, will be entertaining hundreds of YMCA day campers at the local Beavercreek YMCA on Friday, August 8th. A1980 Fairborn High School graduate and valedictorian, Johnson fulfilled his dreams of working for NASA and becoming a leader in his field. Johnson was the pilot of NASA’s latest mission, the space shuttle Endeavor, this past March where the crew performed a record five spacewalks.

YMCA day campers will be able to hear tales of Johnson’s many explorations that include his deployment to Saudi Arabia, his combat in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Southern Watch. Johnson also played a critical role in the investigation of the Columbia accident in 2003. The two years that Johnson spent training with NASA in order to become an astronaut show his dedication and commitment to discovery.

The YMCA of Greater Dayton’s mission is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Originally established in Dayton in 1858, the YMCA now has 11 branches throughout the Miami Valley and services over 70,000 kids and families. The YMCA of Greater Dayton builds strong kids, strong families and strong communities through its programs and services.
