The West Carrollton YMCA is observing its first anniversary.

"It's hard to believe we have been open for one year," said Tim Helm, chief executive officer and president of the YMCA of Greater Dayton. "We're excited by how far the Y has come."

Helm and Bambi Puckett, executive director of the West Carrollton YMCA, were present at the April 12 City Council meeting to report on the YMCA's progress in its first year. The branch of the YMCA of Greater Dayton opened March 29 at South Alex and Liberty Lane.

Helm said membership has reached 1,500 families, or about 5,000 individuals. About half of the members live in West Carrollton and benefit from a discount rate available to residents. About 3,800 individuals registered and participated in various YMCA programs offered during the year.

The YMCA has also provided about $150,000 in financial assistance to enable youths to participate in programs they otherwise could not afford.

"Our philosophy is never to turn away a kid," Helm said.

The Strong Kids Campaign, which raises funds for financial assistance, is under way.

The West Carrollton YMCA serves a membership within a 5-mile radius of the facility, drawing members from Miamisburg, Moraine, Miami Twp., Centerville, Germantown and Farmersville, as well as West Carrollton.

Facilities include a full-size gym with an above-ground running track, a six-lane 25-yard swimming pool, a warm-water therapy pool and a wellness center with fitness machines and a cardiovascular fitness area.
