South YMCA Announces 2005 Volunteers of the Year

March 21, 2005- The YMCA of Greater Dayton recently held its 134 th Annual Meeting at the Schuster Center in Dayton. The event raised close to $21,000 for the YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign. The event consisted of a silent auction, dinner and a program where volunteers and staff were both recognized for their contributions to the success of the YMCA of Greater Dayton.

During the program, the South YMCA recognized Kim Myszka as their 2005 Volunteer of the Year. Kim and her family have been members at the South YMCA for more than 9 years. The entire family keeps busy at the YMCA by participating in youth and adult volleyball (including coaching), swim team, fitness and many other programs. Kim joined the South Board 3 years ago and is the current chair of their membership committee. Two years ago, she took on the job of silent auction chair for the South YMCA and has become their "Superhero" for soliciting gifts for this event bringing in more than $15,000 in total proceeds. Kim also serves as the PTO president for Driscoll Elementary School in Centerville and is a true ambassador when it comes to recruiting and welcoming new members at the Y. We could never repay Kim for everything that she has done and continues to do to strengthen the South YMCA and the community we serve.

The South YMCA also recognized Claire and Evan Houser as the Youth Volunteers of the Year.

The brother and sister combo of Evan, age 13, and Claire, age 9, have proven invaluable to the South YMCA’s success. Each weekend, these two sacrifice their time to help the youth sports program run smoothly. This past year they have:

  • Refereed over 47 soccer games
  • Kept score/time for 54 basketball games
  • Set up the gym for basketball and soccer leagues and practices
  • Helped train other referees
  • Assembled coaches’ packets
  • Led the Youth Sports Pledge countless times
  • Assisted with Soccer Fun Clinic
  • Helped in any way whenever asked!

Evan and Claire are two truly motivated youth who represent in every aspect what the YMCA stands for.
