WEST CARROLLTON | The new YMCA branch in West Carrollton answers a need for a recreational facility that residents have said has been a major concern for years, Mayor Maxine Gilman said.

"It's an opportunity for youth and seniors and all ages to have recreational opportunities," Gilman said.

"It's a beautiful building and definitely an asset to West Carrollton."
The new Y opened March 29 after years of study and consultation with residents and other communities. It is a branch of the YMCA of Greater Dayton.

"Anytime we're able to go into a new community and extend our offerings to new kids and families in the community, it gets us to better meeting our mission," said Tim Helm, chief executive officer of the YMCA of Greater Dayton.

"This was a collaborative effort with the officials and staff of West Carrollton. It could not have been accomplished without the leadership of the City Council and staff. They were great to work with."

Residents and passersby on always busy South Alex Road have been observing the construction as it has progressed on the east side, between Liberty and Quality lanes.

"The West Carrollton YMCA is a place where kids of all ages can come to have fun and grow in spirit, mind and body," according to an YMCA publication about the new facility.

A 46-foot by 102-foot wellness and fitness center contains the newest equipment for cardio-vascular workouts, strength training, free-weights and benches.

The 70-foot by 102-foot hardwood-floored gymnasium features a raised running track. There is also a full-size swimming pool, along with a warm-water therapy pool.

In addition, there are large tiled locker room areas for men and women between the natatorium and the wellness and fitness center.

The front section of the building contains an activities center for all ages, a multipurpose room for group classes, a large nursery, offices, a lounge and a meeting room.

The new facility is expected to serve residents living within about 5 miles, including those from Miamisburg, Moraine, Miami Twp., Centerville, Germantown and Farmersville.

The YMCA does not deny membership to anyone because they are unable to pay the membership fees. Those needing financial help with membership fees may request a confidential YMCA Extra Hands Packet at the member service desk.

"Our goals are to develop age-appropriate activities with an emphasis on skill development and fun," according to the YMCA's publication.

"We are committed to developing the YMCA character traits of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility."
