Josh Sullenberger has been named Executive Director of the Huber Heights YMCA, a position he will officially assume Nov. 1. He is presently the Executive Director of the Preble County YMCA in Eaton, a post he has held for two years.

Tim Helm, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Dayton and Dale Brunner, Group Vice President for the YMCA of Greater Dayton asked Sullenberger if he was interested in the Huber Heights position.

"I decided it would be a good career move and a good opportunity for my family to relocate,” said Sullenberger.

He was formerly the Branch Executive director of the Robinson YMCA in Troy. During his tenure there, he oversaw a $1 million expansion of that facility. He said the expansion was needed to “accommodate the success of that facility and to satisfy the needs of the members.”

Sullenberger was asked if he thought this could happen in Huber Heights.

“My guess is that could probably happen,” he said. “I see unlimited potential for the Y in Huber Heights.”

Sullenberger will be developing a timeline and staffing plans leading up to an anticipated opening date of Feb. 15, 2005. He said there would be four or five full-time positions to start and probably 75-80 part-time positions. He plans to host two job fairs, one in November and one in December.

“It will be an opportunity for the public to learn about the positions we have available,” he said.

Sullenberger said the biggest challenge in opening a new YMCA is to make sure the needs of Huber Heights are being met. He said the goal of the YMCA is to fill voids, not duplicate services.

“I will work closely with Huber Heights to determine what program needs there are for that community,” he said.

Sullenberger plans to move to Huber Heights this month. He said the YMCA is the first piece in an “excellent area of development” that includes a golf course, condominiums and housing developments.

“It brings a nice corridor of opportunity for the city,” he said.

Sullenberger is a 1992 Piqua High School graduate. He graduated from Wright State University with a BA degree in sociology. He and his wife, Stacy, have a baby girl due in five weeks.

“I’m going to miss the closeness of this community and working with the community,” said Sullenberger concerning Eaton. “Eaton’s been a great place for us to be. We’re just looking forward to the great opportunity of opening up the YMCA in Huber Heights.”
