Springboro Sun-Feb. 26, 2004

The Coffman Family YMCA is a very busy place with 1,500 to 2,000 people using the facilities each day. This YMCA celebrated its fourth anniversary in January, and how they have changed. Once a much smaller facility, the YMCA expands each year.

The new Aerobics Studio, the building addition located next to the pool and game room, is just one of the larger changes made to keep up with the customers demands. This studio enables the YMCA to offer additional group aerobic classes. With this addition, the regular classes of “Body Sculpting, Cardio Kick, Low Impact Floor Aerobics, and Butts & Gutts” have had plenty of space to spread out. The new studio also allowed for the addition of more classes. New classes include yogalaties and resist ball classes. These classes are included as part of the basic membership.

The group cycling started in 2002 with 3 classes and now has grown to 9 classes due to increased interest.

A special class on Tuesdays and Thursdays is held for the Miamisburg freshman football team.

An important change, driven by populous trends toward overweight youth, was the beginning of a “Kid Fit” program which is targeted for pre-teens ages 9-11. The purpose pf Kid Fit is to involve youth in early thinking of healthy life styles by involving them in group fitness activities. They receive incentives throughout the programs. This program began late in 2003, but already 189 kids have been oriented to equipment.

The Aquatics area has been bustling. During 2003, the YMCA taught 2, 355 children to swim, ages three and older. The Coffman YMCA has a swim team with 90 members participating. A “Long Course” swim team was also formed. “Life guard” certification classes were taught, certifying many of the life guards for other area pools. The water aerobics classes have proved to be great fun and a super way to exercise with low stress on the joints. The classes in the Therapeutic Pool have become very popular, and several more days and times had to be added to the schedule to accommodate the increased demand.

The Preschool area has added many new and exciting classes. Some new classes include Kids N Clay, Young Artists, Kinder Gardening, Puppet Time, TaeKwonDo. Exploring Preschool classes include, Kinder Arts & Crafts, Sign Language, Sensational Science, Reading & Writing Connection.

Existing classes have been expanded by adding additional space in Tumble Time, Tyke and Me, Gym & Swim and Kinder Cooking.

The summer of 2003 brought Kinder Camp. The camp highlights included the Mobile Planetarium, and a special visit from Tim Harrison with his Wild and Crazy animals. Most of the children will never see these animals again in their adult life. The Kinder Camp has 341 curious 3, 4, and 5 year olds participants.
The YMCA School Age child care, which provides experience for young children grades K-5th on site at the Elementary Schools in Springboro and Carlisle, has grown. The Kindergarten program has 55 students that are cared for and feed lunch each day. Grades 1-5 have 105 students that come as early as 6:30AM and stay as late as 6PM each school day.

The Summer Day Camp consisted of 1700 students that enjoyed activities like swimming. The popular field trips to the aquarium, a Cincinnati Reds game, horse farm, and zoo. Another fun event was the Y Olympics.

The Coffman Y held four family events in 2003. These activities included Eggs, Bunnies, and Baskets with 150 children attending, the Fall Festival with 230 attending, Breakfast with Santa where 150 where served, and the Drop & Shop where 46 children came to spend time at the Y, while their parents finished up their Christmas shopping.

The Youth sports programs have been great fun for both children and adults. Indoor Soccer has 344, four to 12 year olds chasing the ball around the YMCA gyms. The Roller Hockey programs had 75 players. Outdoor Soccer had 477 participants. Baseball and T-ball had 289 children playing. Basketball had 370 participants.

This year The YMCA started a three-year-old Zone Soccer Program which is a huge success. The three-year-olds had 65 registered for the program. Sign ups for Outdoor three-year-old Soccer will soon open with 120 slots available.
Members are an important part of the Coffman YMCA. They provide this great and growing facility. During the year of 2003, 1,409 new families, individuals and youth decided to join the Coffman YMCA. The YMCA assures the community there is plenty of space for any one who would like to join!
