Youth fitness class among new programs offered

Thursday, February 6, 2003

SPRINGBORO--The Coffman YMCA in Springboro opened a 4,500-square-foot aerobics room to the community Jan. 25.

To celebrate the new addition, 75 individuals participated in a two-hour aerobothon and went home wearing a "Survivor Grand Opening" T-shirt.

"With the additional space created by the aerobics room, the YMCA has been able to offer new programs for the children and families we serve," said Darlene Reid, Coffman YMCA health and wellness director.

"We introduced some of our new classes such as resistaball and a series of youth fitness classes last week.
There have been many requests for a boot camp class, so one is scheduled to begin in the near future."

The youth fitness classes, which were originally designed for 12 to 15 kids, are serving 18 children with a waiting list quickly filling up. The classes consist of a warm-up, cardiovascular workout with games or a regular exercise class, weights, bands and balls.

Each class ends with an educational component, such as learning about the food pyramid and how to plan a balanced diet on a daily basis.

"We really wanted to focus on youth fitness because of the growing trend of obesity in children," Reid said.

To encourage children to continue with their new lifestyle, parents receive handouts on the topics discussed and are encouraged to participate in the last class with their child.

Registration for all Coffman YMCA programs is open. For more information, call 886-9622; visit 88 Remick Blvd., Springboro; or visit ymcaonline.org.
